Dr. Richard Frerichs Named PSBA President-Elect

Penn Manor’s School Board President, Dr. Richard Frerichs, was voted President-Elect of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. Dr. Frerichs has served as Penn Manor’s school board president for the past three years and as vice-president for 10 years prior. Dr. Frerichs is also president of the IU13 board. This is the first time in recent history that a local school board member from Lancaster will serve as president of this statewide organization. Dr. Frerichs will do an outstanding job at PSBA and be able to be a statewide voice for Penn Manor and the other districts in IU 13 as well as for the importance of public education in Pennsylvania.

Eshleman 1st Grade Students Do Pumpkin Math

How many seeds are inside a pumpkin? That was the question that Mrs. Detter’s first grade students pondered during a recent math lesson. The students were split into small groups. Each group of students was given a pumpkin. The first task was to estimate by looking at the pumpkin how many seeds might be inside. The second task (with the help of parent volunteers) was to clean out the inside of the pumpkin and separate the seeds from the pulp. The third task was to count up the seeds using groups of five. The last task was to compare the number of actual seeds in the pumpkin to the estimate. The students also read the book, How Many Seeds In a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara.

Air Quality at Manor MS Letter

The following letter will be sent home with students at Manor MS on October 15. To view the complete Air Quality Report, please click here.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Fournier, Robson & Associates recently conducted air quality testing at Manor Middle School. This was due to various moisture concerns at several locations within the building, which included a fungus that was discovered on a number of ceiling air diffusers in the library. Penn Manor School District pursued air quality testing because some of the sources for concern were unknown.

The district, working in cooperation with Fournier, Robson & Associates of Lancaster, a local air quality consultant, tested air samples on Thursday, October 11th  in rooms 107, 108, 112, 121, and the library. In addition, they tested an outdoor air sample for comparison purposes. A summary of the report is listed below:

The data obtained during my site visit on October 11, 2012 indicate that only room 121 [cultural arts room not currently in use] and the Library had elevated levels of mold, specifically Aspergillus/Penicillium-type spores. Room 121 had 1,500 spores/m3 and the Library had 1,300 spores/m3. These results are elevated compared to the result of 160 spores/m3 of Aspergillus/ Penicillium-type spores in the outdoor sample. The data for the “other particles” were unremarkable.

The results were reviewed with the School District’s physician, Dr. Jon Ichter of Manor Family Health. Dr. Ichter advised the district to follow through with recommendations from the company and to continue to monitor the situation. He indicated that Lancaster County, particularly areas in the midst of farmland like Manor Middle, has one of the highest areas of diversity of spores in the world. As a result, the district does not intend to limit usage of the library at this time.

The library ceiling air diffusers were thoroughly disinfected and cleaned as recommended by the consultants. At this time a ventilation system inspection company is working with Penn Manor School District to inspect and address areas that may be of concern.

Please feel free to contact my office or Mr. Edwards, principal of Manor Middle, if you have questions. We will provide an update to you as we learn more information. A copy of this letter along with the testing report from Fournier, Robson & Associates can be found on the school district website.

Sincerely,

Michael G. Leichliter, Ed.D.

October 15-19 is National School Bus Safety Week. The schools in the Penn Manor School District are taking the time to thank their bus drivers for providing safe transportation to school and back each day. For example, Martic Elementary School students made “Thank You” signs for each of their bus drivers and each bus rider signed their name and Pequea Elementary students and staff held up a banner to welcome the bus drivers.  Bus drivers in the district drive 4,900 miles every day.

Pequea Observes National Fire Prevention Week

Students at Pequea Elementary spent part of this week learning about National Fire Prevention Week. At the end of the week, the school held a fire drill with the West Willow Fire Department responding. After searching the school for possible fire hazards (and finding none!) the firemen showed the students around the fire truck and emergency vehicle explaining how they fight a fire and describing the function for different pieces of equipment.

Eshleman 2nd Grade Students Discover “Everybody Cooks Rice”

The students in Mrs. Thomson and Mrs. Kaplan’s second grade classes learned about world geography and also read the book, “Everybody Cooks Rice” by N. Dooley. Tying the two lessons together resulted in Rice Day Extravaganza. The students were treated to rice dishes from sixteen countries. They sampled coconut rice from Sri Lanka, curry rice from India, plov from Uzbekistan, maki-sushi from Japan, Spanish rice from Puerto Rico, Haitian rice from Haiti and more. Staff and parents prepared the different dishes for the students to sample.

Football Players Encourage Reading with Literacy Initiative

Penn Manor High School football players are spreading the message to elementary students that reading is important. In its second year, the football literacy initiative program encourages elementary students to read every day. To help reinforce this message, the football players visit elementary schools during lunch to talk with them about reading. The program runs from September 15 until October 25. Elementary students are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes every day and keep a participation log. All students participating will be invited onto the football field during the October 26 football game. They will also receive a signed photo of the team.

Conestoga 2nd Grade Students Help with Garden Composting

Miss Weber’s 2nd grade students received instruction from Conestoga Garden parents, Mrs. Horst and Mrs. Thomas, on how to start a worm compost. The students measured the red wiggler worms that are used for composting. They prepared the newspaper bedding in a plastic tub, added recycled food and the worms. The worms  will eat the food scraps, which will become compost as it passes through the worm’s body. The students also had a chance to separate worm castings that produce fertilizer from uneaten food and newspapers from a previous composting bin and add the fertilizer to the carrots and beets in the garden.

PSSA Results for 2012

Penn Manor is proud of our 2012 performance of the statewide Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) results released today by Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis.  While we did not make all of the increased national targets for all of our schools, the results clearly indicate that the vast majority of students in Penn Manor are performing well above the expectations of No Child Left Behind.  While we continue to strive for higher achievement, we are proud of the performance of our students and the instruction provided by our teachers.

Eshleman Elementary has traditionally been one of the higher performing elementary schools in Lancaster.  This year they made 12 of the 13 targets missing the target for the economically disadvantaged subgroup in reading.  After reviewing the scores for all student, if one student in that subgroup had answered one or two more questions correctly, they would have met all targets this year.

Penn Manor High School has worked hard to make AYP and has met all academic targets for 2012.  The district has appealed the finding that Penn Manor High School missed the economically disadvantaged subgroup for graduation rate and is working with the Department of Education to provide documentation in order to overturn this ruling.
The link to the PSSA results for 2012 is https://www.paayp.emetric.net. If you have questions about the results, please contact your child’s school or the district office.

Suspicious Vehicle Alert

A letter was sent home with today with Marticville Middle School and Martic Elementary School students regarding a suspicious vehicle/man observed in the area. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Pennsylvania State Police.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Pennsylvania State Police visited both Marticville Middle School and Martic Elementary School today to provide an update on an incident that occurred last week in Providence Township when a young girl was approached by a man in a white van.

The state police are now able to provide a detailed description of the van and occupant. It is a white van with a 5 inch wide turquoise color strip (peeling) near the bottom of the van. There is a metal ladder attached to the right rear passenger door. On the driver’s side, there is a square shaped window behind the driver’s seat and a long horizontal shaped window that runs the length of the van.

The suspect is a white, non-hispanic male, approximately 20-25 years of age. He has short (close shaved) dark hair, thicker facial hair on the chin area with thin handlebar style facial hair up the jawline towards the ears. No mustache.

You are encouraged to contact the state police or your child’s school if you observe this vehicle and/or suspect.  The Penn Manor staff and bus drivers have also been alerted to this situation. Thank you for your help in keeping all children safe.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael G. Leichliter
Superintendent of Schools
